7th International Annual Research Conference on Rule of Law in Context: Indian and Global Perspectives (SYMROLIC) 2018


Symbiosis Law School, Pune (SLS-P), constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) successfully organized the three day International Annual Research Conference on Rule of Law in Context: Indian and Global Perspectives (SYMROLIC) from 27th-29th September 2018 at SLS, Pune. The Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony was Dr. K P Mohanan (PhD, MIT), Co-Founder, ThinQ. The other dignitaries in attendance were Attorney Rebecca Todd, General Counsel, Antioch University, USA, Dr. Rajani Gupte, Vice-Chancellor, SIU, Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Fulbright Scholar, Director, SLS-P, Dean, Faculty of Law, SIU, and Dr. Bindu Ronald, Deputy Director, SLS-P. 

The inaugural ceremony was followed by a Plenary Session on the theme, 'Law & Life Interface - Innovation, Science, Technology, Human Behaviour, Global Policy and Governance' with illustrious members in the panel including Prof. (Dr.) Shashikala Gurpur, Fulbright Scholar, Director, SLS-P, Dean, Faculty of Law, SIU, Prof. Rebecca Todd, University Counsel, Antioch University, United States of America, Dr. Sairam Bhat, Professor of Law, National Law School of India, Bangalore and Dr. Urvashi Rathod, Director, Symbiosis Centre for Research and Innovation. Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, spoke on the topic "Rule of Law in Context: Compliance and Behaviour". Prof. Rebecca Todd spoke on "Rule of Law: Global Approach", and mentioned how Rule of Law acts a check on the arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established laws. Dr. Sairam Bhat, in his discourse on the theme "Law & Life: Innovation and Health Care in India", reflected on the question whether the fundamental right to health included the right to easy access to medicine. Dr. Urvashi Rathod, speaking on the topic of "Innovation and Science, Technology and Law", stressed the importance of innovation that is in consonance with the laws governing the sustainability of the environment. She also highlighted the importance of the Precautionary Principle of the Rio Declaration in order to maintain the fabric of equality as established by the principles of Rule of Law.

Day 2 of SYMROLIC began with the presentation of papers in four parallel tracks including Law and Human Behaviour, chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Clemens Arzt, Director of Research Institute of Public and Private Security, Berlin School of Economics and Law, Germany and co-chaired by Dr. Pramod Damle, Professor, Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management, SIU. 

This was followed by a track on Business, Trade, Commerce, Management & Law, chaired by Prof. Lindsay Gordon Simpson Trotman, Professor, Massey Business School, Massey University, New Zealand and co-chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Gopalan, Pro-Chancellor Academic Innovation, Deakin University, Australia.

The final track on paper presentation was on International Law, Policy and Governance, chaired by Prof. (Dr.) T R Subramanya, Dean, School of Legal Studies, CMR University and co-chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Arvind Jasrotia, Director, The Law School, University of Jammu.

The proceedings of the day concluded with a workshop on Inquiry in Education conducted by the Hon'ble Chief Guest Dr. K P Mohanan (PhD, MIT), Co-Founder, ThinQ.

The theme of the first track on Day 3 of SYMROLIC was 'Common Challenges & Converging Perspectives in Europe and Asia', chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Rajendra Jain, Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, JNU, Delhi and co-chaired by (Dr.) Daniela Irrera, Professor of Political Science and International Relations, University of Catania, Italy and President of the European Peace Research Association (EuPRA), (Dr.) Natasza Styczyńska, Assistant Professor, European Studies; and Chair of Culture and Society in Europe, Jagiellonian University, Poland and Prof. Galina Rousseva-Sokoloca, Associate Professor, Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology, Sofia University.

It was followed by the track on 'Innovation, Science, Technology and Law, which was chaired by Dr. Urvashi Rathod, Director, Symbiosis Centre for Research and Innovation, SIU and co-chaired by Dr. Pramod Damle, Professor, Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management, SIU.

The track on Public Law, Society and Governance, was chaired by Prof. Rebecca Todd, University Counsel, Antioch University, United States and co-chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Tara Prasad Sapkota, Dean, Faculty of Law and Member of Executive Council, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal; Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Nepal.

It was followed by a workshop on Data Analysis, SPSS and Ti, chaired by Dr. Manisha Gore, Director, Symbiosis Centre for Health Sciences.

 

The Valedictory Ceremony for the event was held on 29th September, 2018. Dr. Rajendra Kumar Jain, Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi was the Chief Guest for the event. The winners of each Track of the conference were announced. Pooja Kanmani and Laxmi Priya from the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University won the first prize from the first track, for their paper titled "Child Abuse: Protection of Child Witness".The first position from the second track was shared by Tanvi Sharma and Hannah Tulip Shekinah from SLS, Pune, for their papers: "Resale Price Maintenance in India: with special emphasis on Hyundai Motors case" and "Burying the Memorandum of Association: A comparative Study" respectively. Rini Jincy Paul and Yophika Thabah from SLS, Pune bagged the first position from the third track for their paper on "Corporate Environment Crime: Responsibility and Liability in a Globalizing World". Murielle Rodrigues from SLS, Pune bagged the first prize from the fourth track for her paper: "A Comparision Between Indian and European Laws on "Free to Air" Broadcasting Policy in Sports Events". Dr. Rupal Rautdesai, SLS, Pune and Gaurav Sharma, SI(DU) won the first prize from track five for their paper: "AI and the Armed Forces: Legal and Ethical Concerns". Prof. Sanjana Mittal, Prof. Nitin Kumar and  Parth Dixit, SLS, Pune won the first position for their paper entitled: "Reasonability of Reasonable Classification: The Case of Dissents and the New Doctrine". There were two commendable mentions made in the conference; S. Bindu Sravya, Shivani Trichnopoly Ravi Kanth and Vidhi Madan, GNLU.

Valedictory ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Bindu Ronald, Deputy Director, SLS, Pune.
